By Kay, the 7th-grade Mini-Blerd Journalist! I just got the chance to watch the movie Phineas and Ferb: Candace Against the Universe.  Everybody knows that Phineas and Ferb is a kid’s show on Disney Channel. It’s about two boys going on adventures throughout their summer break and annoying their big sister, Candace. The movie is only a little bit different. In the movie, it’s focusing … Continue reading Blerd Galaxy Mini-Blerd Journalist Film Review: Phineas and Ferb Candace Against the Universe

Dear Black Parents: We See You, We Hear You, We Are You

A Love Letter from Black Teachers During Distance Learning Look… we get it. We really, truly get it. You are not a teacher. You didn’t sign up for this. What the world is throwing at you right now is insane. You have to raise your kids during a pandemic already, and now you have to help teach them, too. That’s crazy! What’s worse is that … Continue reading Dear Black Parents: We See You, We Hear You, We Are You

RIP Chadwick Boseman: On Mourning Black Royalty and Collective Black Grief

I am crying as I write this. Not sobbing, but the slow, searing flow of tears that burn as they fall. I don’t have the strength to sob, and honestly, the burn is helping. It means that I can still feel something. This is not about me, though. This is about Chadwick Boseman. This is about the collective Black joy that he brought to us. … Continue reading RIP Chadwick Boseman: On Mourning Black Royalty and Collective Black Grief

Film Review: ‘Asunder’ Is On the Verge of Something Great

The “anatomy of a marriage” film is a category I use for movies that are about the realities of marriage and little else. The story does have a plot and an interesting arc, however, the meat of the narrative is how a couple navigates the ups and downs of being a married couple. Plenty of films have done this—like The Story of Us starring Bruce … Continue reading Film Review: ‘Asunder’ Is On the Verge of Something Great

Film Review: ‘Random Acts of Violence’ Tests the Ties Between Artist, Their Art, and The Fans

The comic artist as center of the horror film is not a trope that is practiced often. Many of us are hard-pressed to name one film other than Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence that takes on the artist, his art and the fans that keep him going. However, it works in this film, despite having the striking Jesse Williams as the artist Todd. Although … Continue reading Film Review: ‘Random Acts of Violence’ Tests the Ties Between Artist, Their Art, and The Fans

Film Review: The Emperor Offers a Much Needed Look at an OG Resistance Leader

‘Emperor’ is not a dull history lecture, but rather an action-packed film that recognizes the value of Black America’s traumatic past. It uses that past to embolden us today with the knowledge that we came together then and struggled hard to fight off tyranny in the form of slavery. Continue reading Film Review: The Emperor Offers a Much Needed Look at an OG Resistance Leader
